Can We Retrain an Old Dog?

我們可以重新訓練一隻老狗嗎

Our dog, Grizzly, is 14 years old. He is well trained and healthy, but has some hearing loss and pain in his back legs, and it’s beginning to affect his behavior. He has always slept in our bed, but now he has trouble climbing our stairs and struggles to get up on the bed. He’s also started stealing food. We’re worried about him getting hurt or eating something he shouldn’t, but we don’t know what to do. He won’t go near the ramp we bought him, and we’re not sure if it helps to use commands like “no” or “leave it” if he can’t hear us. Is it possible to retrain him — or is it too late for him to learn anything new? 我們的狗狗Grizzle現在十四歲，他很健康也受到很好的訓練，但是他的後腿有點疼痛而且有點重聽，這也開始影響到他的行為。他總是會睡在我們的床上，但是現在他卻很難爬上我們的樓梯，艱難的爬上那張床。他也開始偷食物。我們擔心他會受傷或是吃到一些他不能吃的，但是我們不知道要怎麼辦。他不接近我們買給他的斜坡。我們也不確定要不要用"不" "離開他"這樣的指令，如果他聽不到我們的話。我們有機會重新訓練他嗎?或是對他來說已經太好以至於學不起新東西了?

Your old dog certainly can learn some new tricks! Training can benefit a senior dog in a number of ways: It creates an opportunity to bond with you, it challenges his mind and it can even help him cope with some age-related physical changes.

Keep in mind, though, that for older dogs, unlearning an established habit and relearning a new behavior in its place can come with certain challenges. In your case, Grizzly’s ability to learn new behaviors will be tempered by his health issues. For example, his hearing loss may mean you need to use hand signals rather than verbal commands. Be sure to consider this when you are setting goals for training.

1. Tire Them Out 解開他們
Some dogs and cats are happy to sleep all day, but puppies and breeds such as border collies and huskies were born to run, says Sarah Pennington, a dog trainer. Try to fit in a vigorous walk – between 30 and 60 minutes – every day before work.

有些狗跟貓，非常樂意整天睡覺，但是小狗跟有些品種的狗如同科雞跟哈士奇，天生就會亂跑，一位狗狗訓練家沙拉說。試著在工作前，有一段充滿活力的散步，大約三十到六十分鐘。

2. Keep Watch, Big Brother Style

As long as your home computer is on, your pet’s Skype will always pick up when you call.

Even the most docile pet can howl or gnaw out of boredom or separation anxiety. Put dog biscuits in a feeding toy that has them unlock a puzzle to access their treat. Indoor cats will enjoy the distraction of a toy that taps into their wild instincts, such as a noise-making crinkle ball.

4. Contain, Don’t Crate
Nature calls for young dogs about every half hour, but resist putting your canine in a crate. Instead, keep them in a safe, chew-free area with access to food, water, toys, their crate and a spot for them to do their business.

Up next, the Iraqi-led troops are on the outskirts of Mosul, two weeks into an operation to retake the city from ISIS terrorists. The Iraqis have come up against roadblocks, snipers and landmines. And there are reports that ISIS has taken thousands of civilians, mostly women and children into the city to use as human shields.

ARWA DAMON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: A sand storm has swept and adding another layer of difficulty and challenges to this current push around the town of
Gogjali. This is the closest that Iraqi forces have been to Mosul since ISIS swept through and took it over more than two years.

And throughout the course of the day, they have been coming across artillery fire, exchanging it, mortar fire, rocket fire and sporadically, some pretty intense small arms fire exchanges as well.

They don`t know exactly how many ISIS fighters are here because the commander says ISIS is moving its assets between Gogjali and the city of Mosul itself. We are less than a kilometer away from its outskirts.

But what ISIS has been doing and what we saw them do on this day is seemingly send small groups of fighters to try to circle around and attack the more fixed positions that the Iraqis have been setting up.

ISIS does regularly sneak up armed forces and this particularly position did not receive any incoming fire all morning, but then a few rounds came in and they believe that they spotted just around that hour right there.

A rocket strike was then called in to take out what was believed to be the ISIS fighters` positions. Now, the commander here say that they`re going through compared to other areas, very slowly, very methodically, and that is mostly because there are around 25,000 civilians believed to still be inside Gogjali, which makes things like calling in an airstrike or using their artillery or rocket fire that much more difficult, it has to be very precise, otherwise, they risk causing significant civilian casualties.

被請求取出火箭炮砲擊，攻擊他們認為ISIS的所在。現在，指揮官在這裡相對於其他城市，說他們已經非常緩慢，非常有條理地前進，大部分是因為據信有大約25000的居民依舊在Gogiali城裡，這讓使用大砲、火箭炮攻擊更加困難，他必須要非常的精準，否則就有大量人民死亡的風險。

Thousands of people yesterday took to Taipei’s streets to support the 14th annual Taiwan lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Pride Parade.

昨天千人走上台北街頭，支持第十四週年台灣蕾絲邊，同志，雙性戀以及跨性別者(LGBT)驕傲遊行。

Braving rainy weather, the crowd congregated on Ketagalan Boulevard before standard bearers joined the crowd with a large rainbow banner to lead the parade.

在旗手們拿著彩虹旗幟帶領群眾之前，群眾們無視下雨的天氣，聚集在凱達格蘭大道。
